Manuka Honey
Manuka Honey is a unique honey from New Zealand renowned for its special properties which include the presence of the naturally occurring compound methylglyoxal. Research continues to uncover the many attributes of Manuka Honey.
Manuka honey from New Zealand is known for its exceptional antibacterial activity, which is due to high amounts of the 1,2-dicarbonyl compound methylglyoxal (MGO). MGO in manuka honey is formed via non-enzymatic dehydration from dihydroxyacetone (DHA) during honey maturation.

Chronic wounds are a major global health problem. Their management is difficult and costly, and the development of antibiotic resistance by both planktonic and biofilm-associated bacteria necessitates the use of alternative wound treatments. Honey is now being revisited as an alternative treatment due to its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and the inability of bacteria to develop resistance to it.

Professor Thomas Henle and colleagues at The Technical University of Dresden publish the research results upon identifying the substance formerly known as the “unique manuka factor” primarily responsible for the non-peroxide activity of manuka honey.

New research (Oct 2012) from researchers at Cardiff regarding Manuka honey's bactericidal activity

From Abstract: Following the discovery of synergistic action between oxacillin and manuka honey against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, this study was undertaken to search for further synergistic combinations of antibiotics and honey that might have potential in treating wounds.

Honey has been used since ancient times and more recently, for the healing of wounds and against infectious diseases. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of two manuka honeys showing different potencies of their antibacterial activity, on potentially pathogenic oral bacteria.
A new product (Manuka honey with Cyclopower) has been developed using encapsulated Manuka honey combined with a-cyclodextrin (a natural cyclical sugar), creating a free-flowing powder that can easily be added to foods and beverages for ease of delivery of health benefits.

Research shows Cyclopower with manuka honey has antibacterial activity against superbugs like antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
